Mr. Ward leads BKBH’s Insurance Defense Group and has worked extensively with insurers, employers, and large institutional clients in the state and federal courts around Montana, and before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Human Rights Bureau and Workers’ Compensation Court. His clients include NorthWestern Energy, Liberty Northwest Insurance Corporation, International Paper, among others. He is involved in complex litigation, including defending hundreds of claims and lawsuits involving asbestos exposure at the Superfund site in Libby, MT.
Leo S. Ward was born in South Bend, Indiana and raised in Helena, MT. by an English professor and a Chemistry instructor. Mr. Ward received his B.A. in English, magna cum laude, from St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN, his M.A. in English Literature from the University of Notre Dame and his J.D., with high honors, from the University of Montana School of Law in 1987. During his undergraduate and graduate years, he worked as a security guard, keno caller, grave digger, videographer, business machine salesman, fitness director, racquetball instructor, and legal clerk. He is a partner and works in the firm’s Helena office.
Mr. Ward and his wife have four adult sons. Mr. Ward enjoys mountain biking, running, hiking, spinning, cross training, weight lifting, racquetball, and reading history, philosophy and fiction, travel and many other outdoor and indoor activities. He served as a board member, vice president and president of Helena Youth Soccer Association and was responsible for initiating the development of a large, multi-field complex, which hosts local and statewide competitions and tournaments.
