Laura Buchholtz


Laura Buchholtz was born and raised in Missoula, Montana.  After high school, she became a foreign exchange student in Chalais, Switzerland from 1999-2000 where she taught skiing and attended school.  In 2000, she enlisted in the United States Air Force as an Arabic Linguist.  She left the Air Force in 2005 and moved back to Montana.  She earned her Bachelors of English from the University of Montana in 2008. She then attended law school at the University of Montana School of Law where she earned her Juris Doctorate in 2011. Afterwards, she clerked for the 20th Judicial District, Lake County, Montana.  She then commissioned as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) in 2012 and moved to Santa Maria, California.  She was then stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Great Falls, Montana in 2015.   She later moved back to Missoula and has been practicing at BKBH since 2016. Ms. Buchholtz is located in BKBH’s Missoula office.  Ms. Buchholtz continues to serve in the Montana National Guard.

Laura has specialized experience in military divorces and child custody disputes.  This includes dividing military retirement benefits including interpreting Tricare eligibility, Servicemember Group Life Insurance (SGLI) benefits, commissary and base access privileges as well as military retirement ratios based on time in service and length of marriage.  She also understands active duty rights under the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act (SCRA), family support obligations for each respective branch of the military, and ancillary consequences on military careers and benefits.  She has experience in interpreting and providing legal advice on the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), military regulations, and Department of Defense (DoD) guidance.

In September 2017, Laura earned the award of Top Trial Counsel for the Trial Defense Advocacy Course Class 17-B at the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s School at Maxwell Air Force Base.
